Harlan Independent Schools Field House and Concessions (Rendering), Harlan, KY
The Harlan Independent School District, ranked in the Top 10 of Kentucky's 174 public school districts in academic performance on state assessments in 2011 and 2012, selected GRW to provide a variety of architecture and engineering services to improve the safety and learning environment of its students.
- For the Harlan Independent School District's facility plan update, GRW’s site/civil, structural, architectural, mechanical and electrical personnel initially surveyed the systems and finishes of the District's buildings. Included were the central office building, the elementary, middle and high schools; the gymnasium, and the community learning center. GRW provided detailed estimating for projects identified and prioritized in discussions during the facility planning process.
- At the high school, GRW is designing a new 3,000 SF cafeteria and 2,200 SF kitchen addition to serve the high school and middle school students who currently share the cafeteria and kitchen at the elementary school.
- For the district's athletic complex, GRW designed a pre-engineered, 7,200 SF field house to include field maintenance storage, football storage, laundry, men’s and women’s staff locker rooms, batting cage, coaches' offices, weight training, fitness training, and girls' and boys' locker rooms. Concession facilities are also included. The building is designed to be built in phases as funding is available.
- A priority project at the elementary school involved replacing existing doors that had edge hardware which prevented doors from properly closing and latching. To increase security at the school, GRW prepared plans and specifications for replacement of all exterior doors and selected interior doors correcting primary and secondary security perimeters previously compromised and upgraded exterior entry point access control system replacement. GRW also designed ADA accessibility improvements at the elementary school.
- At the Harlan Independent School District's baseball field, GRW designed a ramp to provide ADA accessibility from the walkway to parking to the spectator access point. The ramp was designed to work with existing grades minimizing grading and drainage requirements.
